Laser Thermal is a Charlottesville-based technology company born out of decades of academic research and development in the ExSiTE Lab at the University of Virginia. What started as academic work has grown into a small but rapidly emerging company focused on solving a problem many scientists and engineers know well: understanding how heat moves through materials.
Early on, the team experienced firsthand how difficult it can be to get reliable thermal data, especially for modern materials like thin films, composites, and complex structures. That experience shaped the company’s direction. Rather than accepting approximations, Laser Thermal set out to build tools that make accurate thermal measurements more accessible and practical.
Today, the company develops advanced measurement systems that help researchers and engineers better understand how materials manage heat. These tools are used in areas like electronics, energy storage, and advanced materials development. At the same time, Laser Thermal continues to support hands-on testing services, working closely with partners across industry and academia.
While the technology is highly specialized, the company itself remains grounded in Charlottesville. Many team members have ties to UVA, and the company continues to grow locally, contributing to the region’s innovation ecosystem. As a small but dedicated group of engineers and scientists, Laser Thermal values collaboration, curiosity, and building things that work in the real world.
As it continues to expand, the company is focused not just on advancing measurement technology, but also on being an active and supportive part of the local community it calls home.
