About me
Steve King, MPA serves as the Assistant to the City Manager for the City of Charlottesville, where he acts as the City Manager’s primary project manager and leads the City’s Strategy and Prosperity Portfolio. In this role, he and his team work at the intersection of the social and economic determinants of health and operational innovation, advancing initiatives that strengthen organizational performance and expand community wellbeing.
Steve brings more than 15 years of public sector leadership across local, county, and state government. Before joining Charlottesville, he served as Senior Program Manager at the International City/County Management Association, guiding national efforts to help local governments enhance economic mobility, leverage federal funding opportunities, and implement resident-centered, data-informed strategies. His prior roles include Economic Development Programs Administrator for the City of Richmond and Senior Policy Advisor to the Governor of Colorado.
Across his career, Steve has managed multimillion dollar portfolios, built durable cross-sector partnerships, and led initiatives focused on improving outcomes for communities and public institutions alike. He views effective governance as a daily practice rooted in transparency, ethical leadership, and responsiveness. In Charlottesville, he brings that commitment to advancing City Council’s strategic priorities and championing a more prosperous and equitable future for all residents.
