About me
Laura Barnes is the Lawrence R. Quarles Professor of Engineering and Applied Science in the Department of Systems and Information Engineering and Associate Director of the Link Lab at the University of Virginia. Her research advances the human-centered design of intelligent systems that integrate mobile sensing, wearable technologies, and data science to improve health and well-being. She studies how human behaviors—captured across both micro-level daily experiences and broader social and environmental contexts—shape health outcomes. Central to her work is translating these insights into clinical and community settings, where adaptive, AI-enabled systems deliver personalized interventions and support proactive health management. By bridging ubiquitous computing, artificial intelligence, and human-centered design, her research generates both individualized and population-level insights that advance precision health and promote more equitable, effective care.
