Dr. Royal A. Gurley, Jr. has served as superintendent of Charlottesville City Schools since October 2021 and brings over two decades of experience in education, including roles as a teacher, instructional specialist, and administrator. He is also an eight-year Armed Reserves veteran and a proud alumnus of the Virginia State University.Under his leadership, the division has advanced key initiatives in equity, innovation, and community engagement—expanding parental leave, launching Knight School, securing major grants and recognitions, and addressing longstanding challenges such as rezoning and accreditation. Dr. Gurley also led the successful establishment of a collective bargaining agreement with the Charlottesville Education Association.He remains committed to academic excellence, student well-being, and strong community partnerships.
